Even the most simple of missions can end in pain instead of pleasure if they're not thought through. Before trying any missions on this site, read though our INITIAL BASIC TRAINING below to help keep you safe while out on your adventures.
In the MISSION:EXPLORE book you will find a section called EXPLORER BASIC TRAINING. This is the place to learn how to avoid being bitten by a crocodile and what to do if the worsed happens...
INITIAL BASIC TRAINING
You're Initial Basic Training is to read and follow 10 basic rules. Follow these and you stand a much better chance of surviving your missions.
1. Get permission to do the mission. Follow what warning signs say and follow any rules that you know of.
2. Get into a team whenever doing the more challenging missions. Three is a magic number. If one of you gets hurt, one person can stay with them while the other goes for help.
3. Make sure you let someone who cares about you know where you are going and what time you’ll be back.
4. Pack a watch, phone and basic survival kit (any medication you take, some plasters, chocolate and a drink will probably do).
5. Make sure that you look after yourself and your friends. Don’t be persuaded to take silly risks.
6. Hatch a plan in case it all goes wrong. Make sure you have an emergency contact and that you know their number. Do you know the number for the emergency services? Where would you go to get help? It's a good idea to keep all these details written down in your pocket.
7. Never use kit that you need training for e.g. climbing ropes; they won’t keep you safe if you don’t know how to use them. If you want to get more advanced, go with an expert or on a course.
8. Never go anywhere with a stranger. Most people are friendly though, so if you need help ask for it.
9. If the mission goes badly follow these three steps:
10. Have fun!
1. Don’t panic!
2. Call your emergency contact, tell them what has happened and where you are.
3. Stay where you are and wait for them to arrive.
